PLAR portfolio development paused until fall 2028

Student interest in Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) significantly exceeds the number of students that we can support through the current model. To increase access and better meet student demand, Learner Support Services’ Centre for Learning and Accreditation (CLA) team is redeveloping its PLAR processes and resources to create a more scalable and sustainable approach.

To facilitate these updates, CLA has temporarily paused new PLAR portfolio development services, which all require mentor support. PLAR mentoring is expected to resume in fall 2028.

If this delay affects your academic plans, contact your Academic Program Advising team to discuss how to complete your program without PLAR.

If you think PLAR may benefit you, you can complete some preparatory work during the pause. However, mentoring will not be available until the program redevelopment is complete.

How to prepare for PLAR during the pause

If you plan to pursue PLAR when services resume, you must complete the following activities:

  • Review the PLAR FAQs for more information about the PLAR redevelopment.
  • Explore all other PLAR information on our website.
  • Complete the PLAR Readiness Assessment located on our Am I PLAR ready? page.
  • If your PLAR Readiness Assessment identifies PLAR potential, email a current DegreeWorks worksheet and updated résumé to plarinquiries@athabascau.ca. Review the PLAR résumé requirements before submitting your documents.
  • Discuss potential PLAR credit placement with a PLAR advisor.
  • Complete the PLAR Orientation once PLAR potential is confirmed.
  • Confirm your intention to pursue PLAR and enter the mentoring wait list.

If you have questions about the PLAR Readiness Assessment and Orientation, email the PLAR Advisor at plarinquiries@athabascau.ca.

All questions or concerns about the PLAR redevelopment should be directed to Carrie Anton, Project Manager, at carriea@athabascau.ca or Serita Smith, Project Sponsor, at seritas@athabascau.ca.
